“حوت يأكل حوت وقليل الجهد يموت”
With this fabled Tunisian proverb, a seamless picture of the food chain encapsulates the ins and outs of power privilege...
Power guarantees many privileges, which make its possessor far from the areas of "targeting". This is why the "strong" lives in relative peace in exchange for an assumed threat from those who hold the same balance. It was said, "A whale eats a whale, and with little effort it dies."
This proverb, in its apparent meaning, depicts life in the oceans, where there is no place for the "little effortful" or the weak and broken, who must rely solely on their livelihood to survive. Or he dies with the availability of suitable and ready reasons for his "death".
With this artwork, I aimed to conceal beneath the vibrancy of colors and the traditional ceramic and Amazigh motives a scene of the ongoing struggle for dominance and survival within our society, wherein the "weak" have no chance of survival or dominance among the "strong". Under the surface of the peaceful and freed country, which our narrow society depicts us as children, lies a vast ocean of human interactions where animal instinct is revived. "Remain silent; we'll sugarcoat it," says authority.
No more than 100 meters down your street, kids are fighting to get a chance to go to school and their parents are battling to sell the 10 bottles they picked from the street. At the end of the day, all of them are eaten by the economic whale, a logical yet harmful explanation for what is happening in Tunisia: transgressions, injustice, and social fragmentation.
